5 Steps to a happier, healthier and resilient workforce

Would you like a happier, more productive and resilient workforce? Investing in their wellbeing could be the answer you’ve been looking for.

"It shouldn’t have taken a global pandemic to push people’s health and wellbeing to the top of the corporate agenda as a critical business continuity issue."

That's a fairly harsh message to hear but thank goodness it has been pushed to the top of the agenda. Now let's make the most of this increased awareness of the need to take a proactive, rather than reactive, approach.

How do you do that you may well ask? You wouldn’t be alone in posing that question. Many employers are aware of the need to do more for their staff’s wellbeing, however where to start is the conundrum.

  • Who can help us?

  • How much will it cost the business?

  • How do I know it will make a difference?

  • Will staff actually take it up?

  • How much do we need to do? How often? What specifically?

The answer is that there is no right or wrong; starting is the key. It’s time to pay more than lip service to the creation of healthy workplaces. Monthly bulletins and posters on the wall just don’t cut it, fostering cultures of sustainable care and support has never been more important than now.

Workplaces have changed. You only need to look at the current recruitment challenges, staff turnover since the pandemic, the quiet quitting culture and the high, but often not unreasonable expectations of the new graduates, to see that employer offerings need to shift – and quickly.

So, what can you do?

Start the wellbeing conversation

This could involve bringing in external providers like health coaches to lead interactive sessions with staff for example. If budgets allow, then offering short 1-1 health coaching sessions can be incredibly valuable too.

Shake up the culture

From walking meetings to fruit baskets to replace the biscuit tin, there are countless ways to kick things off!

Create your champions

Ideally the leadership team will be walking the talk, however it also helps to have department leads to organise events and keep the momentum.

Create the vision

Explain why wellbeing is important to your company and the impact there will be if you do this well – from productivity to profitability, the wins are huge. Your staff will feel cared about, their home lives will improve, and their energy levels will be unlike anything they have experienced before.

Create the plan

Let your team know what to expect so that they know this isn’t another flash in the pan which will fizzle out again. Get their suggestions for what they’d like to see and invest in making it happen. The ROI will be significant!
