Change the way you manage your people

The line manager has always been the lynch-pin of employee engagement.

This appears to be more relevant than ever for the UK, which is seeing a decline in engagement rates, particularly due to the relationship with the line manager.

70% of team engagement is attributable to the line manager. The problem is, line managers are also now becoming disengaged in the workplace, leaving them unmotivated to engage their teams.

Gallup's State of the Global Workplace 2023 report shows the global employee engagement rate has risen from 21% in 2021 to 23% in 2022, largely due to an increase in engagement in Asia.

However, as mentioned, the report is not as encouraging for Europe and the UK.

The report shows the UK are now ranked 33 out of 38 European countries listed for engagement levels in the workplace; only 10% of employees are engaged.

Alarmingly, it also shows that 38% of employees feel stress a lot of the day, and 19% of employees feel anger a lot of the day.

The link between engagement and performance is widely recognised and proven. The State of the Global Workplace 2023 report estimates that low engagement costs the global economy $8.8 trillion, which is 9% of global GDP.

To improve engagement rates the following 3 things are needed as a matter of urgency:

  1. Leaders need to buy in to why engagement and culture are vital for performance

  2. Engage and develop managers so they in turn know how to engage their teams

  3. Understand employee expectations and measure ongoing levels of fulfilment against the things that are important to the individual employees

If you need support with your culture or employee engagement, we can help you with a behavioural diagnostic assessment of your leaders and managers, and help you to measure employee expectations and levels of fulfilment through our unique fulfilment pulse survey.
